Dermatology Services

Keeping your pet's skin and coat healthy through regular veterinary exams.

Skin conditions could only be touching the surface of your pet's health issues. Some skin conditions are a symptom of an underlying issue, while others can be remedied with a treatment we prescribe. When you notice skin conditions, booking an appointment for your pet allows us to accurately diagnose it and provide care that addresses the root cause.

How do I know what's causing my pet's skin issues?

We can often diagnose a skin problem by simply examining your pet. Some dermatologic diseases or conditions may require additional diagnostic testing to ensure we provide an accurate diagnosis. Depending on your pet's symptoms and the results of our physical exam, we run bloodwork or perform a urinalysis, skin scraping, or biopsies. Skin problems are common in pets and can be caused by hormonal disorders, allergies, infections, or parasites like fleas and mites. These issues can be difficult to treat and should be addressed promptly.

What are the signs that my pet has a skin condition?

Depending on the condition, it could manifest as a range of symptoms. Some skin conditions also mirror each other, so it's important for our team to examine your pet to determine which condition is ailing them. Some common signs include:

  • Bare patches or scabs
  • Scaling
  • Redness
  • Inflammation
  • Lumps or bumps

Can I treat my pet's skin conditions on my own?

We don't recommend treating your pet's skin condition on your own unless you've previously received guidance from our team. If some conditions aren't treated properly, they can worsen and cause infections. These are painful for your pet as well as your wallet. Even quick fixes like over-the-counter medication or home remedies can seem convenient at the moment but create long-term complications for your pet. If you have concerns about their skin, please contact us to book an appointment at (416) 231-9293.
